Use the iPhone 5 screen replacement method to repair a cracked or broken screen on an iPhone 5. The guide covers everything you need to do.

There are quite a few steps in this phone repair and it is quite tricky. You need to remove the front facing camera, LCD, speaker and home button. All of these pieces need to be removed from your broken iPhone screen and re-attached to the new display.

Remove the screen using the pentalobe screwdriver

Switch the power off and make sure you have the right tools (see guide below). You also need a new replacement screen. If you wear spectacles, grab your glasses! Without these essentials you can’t complete this cell phone repair.

Apply the suction cup to the screen

Place the suction cup onto the screen. Place it lower down near the home button. Gently pull upward, so you can see the gap between the frame.

Gently work the phone screen open

Gently use the case opener tool. Work it around the gap until it becomes loose.

Remove the screws attaching the battery connector

The screen needs to be pulled back. Be careful not to pull it too far. This is because the cables are still attached. Take out the next 3 screws, including the 2 screws that are holding the battery connector down.

Remove the battery connector

The battery connector shield is now loose. Remove the 3 screws and keep them safe. Now take the shield out.

Disconnect the logic board

Using the case opener tool, disconnect the battery. Above that you will find the cables connecting the LCD, digitzer and the front board assembly. They all need to be disconnected from the logic board.

Remove the screen

All of the required procedures to enable you to remove the screen have been completed. It is now safe to remove the damaged screen. If it is cracked be careful!

Start removing good components from the screen

The good working parts from the damaged screen need to be removed. They will be transferred to the new screen. Take out the 2 screws that are holding down the ear speaker and front camera assembly.

Remove the plastic washer

Locate the black plastic spacer which is under one of the screws you removed from the metal bracket. The black plastic spacer is located underneath the bracket so you can’t see it until the bracket is removed.

Remove the earpiece assembly

The bracket holding the earpiece speaker in place can now be removed. Be sure also to remove the earpiece speaker. It is held in place by the earpiece speaker bracket.

Remove the front camera assembly

You need to use the case opener tool to remove the camera assembly. Carefully remove the front camera assembly by prising it off the screen. It is held in by some adhesive.

Remove the front-facing camera and rear microphone assembly

Remove the front-facing camera and rear microphone assembly.

Remove the home button ribbon cable

Remove the 2 screws holding the home button ribbon cable in place.

Remove the ribbon cable from the screen

This is a very delicate step so exercise caution. The home button ribbon cable needs to be very carefully teased away from the screen. It is best to start on the right. Try and open the ribbon by prising it apart between the gold contact points.

Remove the home button

Now the ribbon cable has been removed. You can pry away the home button from the screen assembly.

Remove screws from the screen

There are 4 screws in total you need to remove. 2 screws are located on each side of the screen assembly.

Remove screws from LCD shield

Remove the 2 screws holding the LCD screen protector to the screen. Then remove the metal shield.
